HOFSEQUENZ
Reinterpretation of the Berlin Block
Living, mixed use
2017

On a street somewhere in Berlin you find an opening in a building, you enter. First a theater, bikes and some chatter, again through, something smaller, there’s a tree on the other side you can see, through and a rich garden, birds somewhere, further to a broader space, the sky opens and smells and sounds of wood cutting take over, through and sun, through and over: in the street again.

The richness and variety of situations in a sequence of courtyards is to be reinterpreted through a system, the system is again to be reinterpreted and adjusted to a specific place. Everyone counts with a double oriented apartment: two different courtyards i.e. different characters and light situations, good ventilation. The apartments widen out to balconies and sometimes to loggias and terraces, private and shared. Dwelling, social and cultural facilities as well as working come together in a same space.

Situated in the same block as Tacheles, in Friedrichstraße, the complex consists of 687 residential units arranged on a very simple 3.5m grid based on a shelf-like structure of great transparency; density and quality are targeted at the same time.
